New Chart Table - the Dry Fit!
Jeremy dry fit the chart table!
Calypso’s original, forward-facing, chart table was a sit down affair that was better in theory than in practice, particularly for tall Jeremy; his shoulder didn’t fit under the side deck, so he couldn’t ever use it as designed. It sloped aft, like an old-fashioned school desk, so standing up to use it meant you either had to prop it up to be level or you were dealing with an angled-down chart.
The yard-finished boats have the chart table, a stand-up version, serving double-duty, with the ice box underneath. You might be able to tell from the above photo that we’re shamelessly borrowing the idea, though ours is on the port side instead of on starboard. The cooler-looking thing underneath is our fridge, on lockable sliders so we can access it regardless of the tack we happen to be on. The seam you can see on the top is where the counter will be hinged, again for fridge access.
There’s still a lot to do. Those hinges. Opening up a gap at the outboard side to the fridge has better airflow. Some fiddles across the back part so nothing falls behind. The whole top will get sealed, then covered with a Formica sheet. Jeremy’s talking about reusing some old mahogany trim to put a pretty finish along the edges.
Every day some progress!
