December 2020 Cruising Prep Expenses
Back in July, when I did the last one of these, I thought we’d be back latest mid-October, never dreaming that we’d stay in Vermont almost through Thanksgiving. But there you go - best laid plans and all that.
(As a refresher, this series is to try to give a realistic picture of what we’re spending, both in time and money, on getting Calypso ready to roll for extended cruising. Once we set off, we’ll be doing a snapshot of what it costs to actually be cruising; including these numbers wouldn’t feel right, but on the other hand, not including them would be disingenuous. Hence the “cruising PREP expenses” stuff. I’m hopeful it will help you get a sense of what might be in your future should you decide to buy a less expensive older boat. Does this mean you must spend this amount of either time or money? Not a chance. It all depends.)
We’re in our early 50s and have had this boat since 1992. Jeremy can (and will) fix and make anything. There is very little we outsource, which you may infer when you see the hours we put in.
GRAND BOAT MONEY TOTAL FOR DECEMBER 2020: $2966.31
Boat project total: $306.64 (consumables required to complete boat work)
A lot of battery fittings
Galley fittings, including hinges and special glue for the Corian
Boat gear total: $1180.52 (tools and boat parts)
TOOLS! (jigsaw and router set, sander parts)
Galley gear (immersion blender and SodaStream)
Thru hull parts (this could be either projects or parts)
Random other essential boat gear - tyvek suits, headlamps, fasteners
Miscellaneous total for December: $1479.15 (groceries, yacht club dues, boat storage on hard, storage unit, insurance, gas tooling around Deltaville, electric and internet at River House)
HOURS SPENT WORKING ON THE BOAT: 251* (13 of the 31 days in December Jeremy was also work working, so he couldn’t spend full time on the boat)
counters
thru hulls
lots of other stuff!
As a reminder, these are our expenses directly relating to getting the boat ready to go, which includes things like electricity at the River House (our version of rent) and groceries but not things like Patreon payments or Christmas presents. Arbitrary, maybe. This will change once we set off - those will all be part of the equation. They’re not particularly relevant to getting the boat ready.
