Preparation is Preparation

I don’t think I ever thought I’d hear the term “pandemic” applied in anything other than a historical context. Obviously, that thought has now officially disappeared.

As serial cruisers on a small boat, we’ve become adept over the years at honing in our provisioning lists. Food, supplies, boat parts - we have a good idea of not only what we use but how much of it we need to have on hand to be self-sufficient for an extended period of time.

People tend to have 2 main questions. What do I buy? How much do I need?

The same questions are popping up over and over again as we’re all being advised to stock up and self-isolate or even quarantine if we get sick. Actually, scratch that. A lot of people aren’t asking themselves the questions; they’re just going out and buying everything they can think of, including wiping (hah) out stores of toilet paper.

If you’re worried about how to stock up on food and other necessities, relax. I spent some time re-working part of a provisioning course, making it less cruising-specific and more “coronavirus” focused.

Fast takeaway? 1) You already know the kinds of food you like to eat. 2) You likely can very easily shop for and store enough food (if you don’t have it on hand already) to last for even a 4 week quarantine.

But if you want more guidance, check out the guide I put together. Sometimes just doing something makes you feel calmer and more in control.

Besides, if you don’t get quarantined? You’ve got the shopping all figured out for a while!
